(1) The 1st Board Meeting and General Meeting, Concert

Details We approved the FY 2013 Business Report and Income/Expenditure Report and deliberated on the FY 2014 Business Plan and Income/Expenditure Budget. In tribute to the 55th anniversary of our sister-city relationship with Los Angeles, a string quartet from the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra gave a performance of jazz standards and more.

Details We deliberated on the outline of the FY 2015 Business Plan and Income/Expenditure Budget Proposal Plan, and reported on the Commemorative Project for the 55th Anniversary of the Nagoya-Los Angeles Sister City Affiliation.

2. Commemorative Projects for the 55th Anniversary of the Nagoya-Los Angeles Sister City Affiliation

(1) Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens Spring Festival Panel Exhibition “North American Continent: Animals Saved from the Danger of Extinction”

Details Panel exhibition introducing the American bison, bald eagle and other North American animals saved from the danger of extinction, displayed at the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens’ Zoo Education Center. Panels exhibiting exchanges between Los Angeles and Nagoya were also shown.

(2) Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens North American Zone American Bald Eagle Area Opening Ceremony

(3) Nagoya-Los Angeles Junior High School Friendship Basketball Exchange Farewell Party

Details An exchange party on the occasion of a junior high school basketball team from Los Angeles visiting Nagoya. The party featured dancing and other activities from students. Through this exchange, students were able to develop a sense of mutual understanding and develop friendly relationships.

(4) Nagoya Day

Details Performances on stage featuring taiko drums, calligraphy, and Japanese dance. A cosplay contest also took place. Booths featured samples of Nagoya Cuisine, and trial workshops for calligraphy and kimono dressing, deepening exchange with citizens of Los Angeles. A video introducing Nagoya to audiences was also screened.

(5) Book Donation Ceremony

(6) Sister City Festival 2014

Details Stage events related to Nagoya’s sister cities, with performances including a cheerleader dance routine, performance by the the Los Angeles Nisei Week Queen and Court, a musical performance of Disney songs by a brass band, and a booth introducing Nagoya’s sister cities, including a photo exhibition about Los Angeles were exhibited.

(7) Torino Bus Wrapping Commemorative Event “Enjoying Sister Cities with City Buses!”

Details An event for the Hisaya Odori Parks Revitalization Pilot Program, featuring a music stage with jazz players, and booths introducing Nagoya’s sister cities with a focus on Los Angeles, celebrating its 55th anniversary of relations.

3. Exchange Activities

(1) Japan-Mexico Academy (Liceo Mexicano Japonés) Welcome & Exchange Party

Participants 145 (including 20 Japan-Mexico Academy Students, 4 counselors)
Details A welcome and exchange party on the occasion of students from the Liceo Mexicano Japonés in Mexico visiting Nagoya. The party featured dancing from dance club students at Seiryo High School, and a traditional dance from students from Liceo Mexicano Japonés. Through this exchange, students were able to develop a sense of mutual understanding and develop friendly relationships.

(2) Sister and Friendship Cities Goodwill Missions Welcome Reception

Details We held a Sister and Friendship Cities Goodwill Missions Welcome Reception to welcome the Sister and Friendship Cities Goodwill Missions who came to Japan for the Nagoya Festival and Sister City Festival 2014.

(3) Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens Koala 30th Anniversary Ceremony

Details Ceremony celebrating the 30th anniversary of the first koalas to come to Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens 30 years ago. A goodwill mission from Sydney participated in the event, and the Koala “Tilly,” gifted from the Taronga Zoo was unveiled.


(4) Torino Bus Wrapping Departure Ceremony

Details As part of the exchange activities with the sister city of Torino, a student from Torino created a design that was used to decorate some city buses. This ceremony unveiled the "Bus Wrapping" decoration, and the bus made its first trip. The designer, Alessia Frau, and Torino City Councilmember Luca Cassiani participated in the ceremony.

(1) Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens Autumn Festival Special Exhibition “30 Years of Koalas at Higashiyama Zoo Special Exhibition”

Details In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the first koalas from Australia’s Taronga Zoo to Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, a panel exhibition was shown in the Animal Auditorium. Panels introduced the course of 30 years of Koalas at Higasiyama Zoo, and the charms of Sydney.

(2) 36th Sister and Friendship Cities Children’s Art Exhibition (held together with the Nagoya City Board of Education)

Details The Nagoya City Board of Education and the Nagoya Sister Cities Association worked together to open an exhibition featuring children’s art from Nagoya’s sister and friendship cities. The exhibition also featured panels introducing the sister and friendship cities, allowing Nagoya citizens to cultivate a deeper understanding towards them.

(3) Christmas Party (held together with the Nagoya Japan-Australia-New Zealand Society)

Details We held a Christmas Party together with the Japan-Australia-New Zealand Society, where we were able to deepen understanding toward Sydney and Australia and advance exchange between the members of our respective associations.

(4) Japan-China Friendship New Year’s Gathering (held together with the Japan-China Friendship Association of Aichi (NPO) and Japan-China Friendship Association of Nagoya)

Details The Japan-China Friendship Association of Aichi (NPO) and Japan-China Friendship Association of Nagoya held a “Japan-China Friendship New Year’s Gathering,” allowing participants to cultivate a deeper understanding of Nanjing and China.

(5) Nagoya-Sydney 35th / Nagoya-Torino 10th Anniversary of Sister City Relations “Enjoying Sister Cities with Cheese” Workshop

Details We had a cheese workshop commemorating the Nagoya-Sydney 35th and Nagoya-Torino 10th anniversaries. Characteristic cheeses from Australia and Italy were available for tasting. Information was provided about the history of cheese, ways of preparation, and food cultures to deepen understanding of Australia and Italy.

(6) Operation of the Nagoya Sister Cities Association Website

Details We have consistently updated promotional materials and activity reports on the various activities the Nagoya Sister Cities Association conducts.
